Sand &
Surf Drive-Ins
Baxter Rd. just off Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach, Va.
capacity: 1700 cars
years of operation: 1968-82
currently: condominiums, office park
Purportedly the first twin-screen drive-in on the East Coast, it opened as simply the Twin Drive-In, composed of the "Sand Screen" and the "Surf Screen". Opening-night customers had their pick of Yul Brynner in Villa Rides! on the Surf or Burt Lancaster in The Scalphunters on the Sand. By the mid-'70s the "Twin" name was dropped and the complex was referred to simply as the Sand and Surf Drive-Ins.
