Thaxton Drive-In
Thaxton, Va. (across railroad tracks from the old school)
capacity: 200 cars
known years of operation: 1949-50
A short-lived attempt to compete with the new drive-in in nearby Bedford, it was built by one F.W. McMillan, an electrical engineer by trade who was inspired by visiting a drive-in in Hampton Roads several years earlier. It had a very modest 16-by-20-foot screen and what appears to have been outdoor loudspeakers for sound.
