Drive-In
US 58, 1½ miles west of US 501 south of South Boston, Va.
capacity: 100 cars
years of operation: 1947-59
currently: Budget Inn motel
South Boston's first drive-in, started by C.G. Harris and V.W. Karl of Stony Creek, Va. The first feature on its screen was She Wrote the Book, starring Joan Davis.
Below is part of an aerial photo showing the drive-in in March 1948, six months after it opened. The screen and fence wings are quite visible, but ramping looks nonexistent; it would follow that in-car speakers, not mentioned in the 1947 opening ads, are absent as well.
