Luray
Drive-In
US 340/business south of Luray, Va.
years of operation: 1950?-84
currently: restaurant and self-storage lockers
Opened as the Page Drive-In; changed name to Luray Drive-In by the early '60s. In 1981 it changed name again, under new management, to the Foxfire Drive-In. The following year, it made headlines statewide, and in the Washington Post, when charges were brought against the management by a local minister for showing an allegedly indecent (R-rated softcore) movie on a screen that was plainly visible from the highway. The charges were dropped when the prosecution failed to come up with the money to arrange a screening of the movie.
