Stevesville
Drive-In
US 11 just north of Lexington, Va.
known years of operation: 1954-58
currently: vacant
Boasted the first outdoor CinemaScope screen in Rockbridge County -- one that reportedly was left standing as late as the early '80s. "Stevesville" was a tourist court dating back to the '40s or earlier that stood along US 11 adjacent to the drive-in. Owner Steve Neofotis also operated Steve's Diner next to the tourist court.
Click here to see the remains of the Stevesville -- several ramps and the apparent foundation of the snack bar -- as shown in an aerial photo from 1994 (probably 36 years after the drive-in closed!) The plot of land it sat on, it seems, was and is too steep to be attractive to developers, as well as reportedly being sinkhole-plagued (!) The building to the north is the Econo Lodge.
