Owner Newton M. Keith was also a partner in a flying service that ran out of the town's airport. On September 30, 1948, he piloted a Piper Cub with two companions to Washington, D.C. to pick up some movies he'd booked, but all aboard were killed when the plane crashed into a remote Virginia mountainside.
